Material: Water hyacinth
Our baskets are made from plant fibers, so they smell and feel wonderfully natural.
The water hyacinth is a tropical aquatic plant that grows in rivers and lakes. It actually originates from South America, but has also been introduced to Southeast Asia. There, it's considered a weed because it multiplies incredibly quickly and can cover entire bodies of water with a carpet of leaves. The resulting lack of light and oxygen causes all underwater life to die, which is why the plants must be removed regularly. To prepare the plants for further processing, the leaves are cut off, and the thick stems are dried in the sun for three to seven days. The result is an abundant, sustainable raw material for many pasture jobs here at Soeji!
